I’m Back, Baby!
I write to you as I’m sitting on the empty floor of my former apartment in Adams Morgan. I’ve just completed my successful move to Dupont Circle, and it’s good to be back in the neighborhood I always considered home in DC. The move and the planning necessary to execute it flawlessly kept me from my blogging for quite a while, but rest assured, I am making a triumphant return.
First, I want to congratulate the couple who decided to rent my old apartment. You are inheriting a gem of a residence. Located in quiet Adams Morgan, you are steps away from every restaurant imaginable…as long as you like empanadas and Ethiopian. The vibrant nightlife will amaze you, as drunk white chicks puke all around you on Saturday nights. The apartment itself is stunning…with its 25 year old “classic” appliances and carpet that allows you to see the true history of the place. Don’t let that $156 a month Pepco bill scare you away – the poorly insulated windows here that allow you to watch street fights on Adams Mill Rd are more than worth it.
Second, I’d like to highlight some of the major successes and failures of my planning during the transition period. I’d like to encourage anyone making an in-town move like I did to sign up for a Zipcar membership. There’s nothing better than knowing you have a Toyota Tacoma parked a block away that is available for your use whenever you need it. Moving my large plasma TV was a snap with the Honda Element as well. It really beats renting an overpriced U-Haul if you can do it. Also...never underestimate the power of bubble wrap. It's not just for wrapping!
You can never plan too much. After making lists and schedules for a month, I realized on the second day of the move I didn't have enough boxes! Also, you need to plan in some down time. Sure, moving boxes for ten hours in a day sounds good on paper, but just doesn't work in reality. Aw, hell, there are tons of things that went right and wrong, but now it's all over, and it's time to move on and forget the lessons of the past.
My new apartment is great, but is going to take some getting used to. For example, I now have a 24 hour desk at the new place, which most people would find to be a benefit. I already have had an opportunity to take advantage of this service, and love the convenience. However, the whole situation does make me feel like I’m living in a hotel. Instead of opening up my mailbox to see if my latest version of the Chiasso or West Elm catalog has arrived, now I have to ask for my mail. It’s a bit of a subjugation, but one that I’m willing to accept.
More from the home front as the promise of the new year unfolds…
